There’s nothing remotely GT about the Subaru XV GT

Plenty of artistic license applied here in labelling this version of their best-seller a “GT”

When you slap on the letters “GT” on any vehicle, people expect something sporty or with a little more performance than the regular, garden variety of whatever the base model is. That’s gone out the window with this new variant of the Subaru XV here; dubbed the XV GT.

Though misleading at first, the GT is in fact the product of a collaboration between Giken Co Limited and Masahiko Kobayashi; the former chief designer of Subaru Corporation.

Based on the existing 2.0i-P variant, the XV GT is priced at RM130,788 (OTR w/o insurance) inclusive of a five year/100,000km warranty and sports a few cosmetic enhancements to justify the name and price.

The front and rear bumpers get lip extensions while the bits in between get new side skirts. Completing the exterior kit is a rear hatch spoiler and some silver accents on the pieces to contrast the body colour. That rear diffuser isn’t new but it’s now black instead of matching the body colour.

It’ll roll on new 17-inch fan-blade design alloy wheels with centre caps that denote the GT branding.

Special two-tone leather seats with grey and orange contrast stitching hold the occupants in place. An actual useful feature found in the GT is a side-view monitor system that operates via cameras mounted below both side-view mirrors.

Power remains unaltered. That means the FB20 2.0-litre direct-injected boxer-four still makes 154hp and 196Nm of torque. The familiar Lineartronic CVT with seven virtual ratios sends the power to all four wheels via the signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with X-Mode.

As it’s based on the 2.0i-P, you’ll find LED headlights with Steering Responsive Headlights feature), a 6.3-inch multi-info display above the 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, power adjustable driver’s seat, paddle shifters, rear-view camera and dual-zone climate control.

Safety comprises seven airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, stability control and rear Isofix anchorage points.
