There’s breaking records and then there’s annihilating records; Volkswagen recently executed the latter with its ID.R electric racecar. Fresh from shattering the Pikes Peak record for electric vehicles, the team set its sights on the Green Hell and obliterated the previous record with a 6:05.336 lap of the ‘Ring with Romain Dumas behind the wheel.

To out the time into perspective, that lap is over 40-seconds quicker than the previous one set by the Nio EP9.

Preparing the ID.R for its ‘Ring run required a heap of mechanical and electronic changes from the Pikes Peak attempt.

As it sits, the ID.R beat the long-standing lap record of 6:11.13 set by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 back in 1983 but to further blow your mind, is still about 45-seconds behind the Porsche 919 Evo’s current 5:19.55 record. Yes, the ID.R whipped the previous electric vehicle record by about 40-seconds but is still a further 45-seconds adrift of the all-time record set by Porsche’s spaceship on wheels.

Dumas managed an average speed of 207kph around the 144-turn circuit and the video does look like it’s on hyperdrive… just remember the 919 Evo is 45-seconds faster.
