Remember that Lotus was making an all-electric model? Until now, they referred to it as the Type 130. Well, now it has a name; Evija, or “ev-eye-ya” for those that still pronounce jalapeno as “ja-luh-pee-nyow.” The ‘J’ is silent.

Lotus says the name means ‘the first in existence’ or ‘the living one.’ Pretty fitting if you ask us.

“Evija is the perfect name for our new car because it’s the first hypercar from Lotus, our first electric offering and is the first new model under the stewardship of Geely,” said Lotus CEO Phil Popham.

Like its previous designation, only 130 units of the Evija will be made with production beginning in 2020 at the Lotus facility in Hethel, Norfolk.

Apart from the name, little else is known about the Evija for now. Unsurprisingly, demand is electrifying with expressions of interest more than double the units available.

On the downside, the Evija will be the marque’s first all-new model since 2008. It’s a depressing fact that such a hallowed brand hasn’t had anything new in over a decade but fortunately, Geely is looking to change all that so expect a slate of new models to follow in the wake of the Evija.

It won’t be long before we’re treated to a full reveal of the car. Lotus will be lifting the lid on it later this month in London. Until then however, visitors to the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed should head over to the Lotus stand for a peek at the car under the guise of a light show that’ll hint at exterior design cues.
