We’re not kidding. Honda will be turning their future-retro/retro-future toy car into a real thing that you can get in, strap in and drive. It’s called the Urban EV Concept and it desperately needs a much cooler name than that.

This cutesy Japanese car debuted at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show is a two-door hatch that recalls all the design elements from the first generation Civic hatchback, right down to the round headlights. Here, the A-pillars are made slim to lend the appearance of the wide windscreen and side windows becoming one continuous piece.

Inside, four people will sit on two benches upholstered in different materials; the front is finished in a natural grey fabric and accented with wood. There’s a throw-pillow included for that maximum lounge effect. The dashboard’s wrap-around screen, which extends into the doors, displays all the vehicle’s information you need. The screens on either side of your doors will work as your side mirrors, displaying images from digital cameras. So cool.

The Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe, Philip Ross, has said that the Urban EV will be introduced in Europe late 2019 and order books for this cutey will open early 2019. And yes, it’s only for Europe and not Malaysia.

Having said that, Honda Malaysia is known to pull rabbits out of hats although much of the possibility of us buying one here will depend on how much our infrastructure for electric vehicles grows by then. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.
