KLIMS 18 - Nexo and Kona are 2 more good reasons to visit Hyundai’s booth

It is unclear if Hyundai Malaysia will ever release the NEXO or the KONA here, so catch it while they’re here

Apart from the Santa Fe and the i30 N, Hyundai Malaysia’s booth at the KL International Motor Show also displays two very good-looking SUVs — Nexo and Kona — that we’re not quite sure if they’ll ever get a Malaysian date.

It is understandable that the Hyundai Nexo will not land in Malaysia, in the foreseeable future, because of its fuel source. The Nexo is a Fuel Cell vehicle that uses hydrogen as a fuel source to run the electric motors. It is an extremely clean vehicle that only emits water.

The Nexo’s electric motor can generate 161hp and 395Nm of torque, and it is said to have a driving range of more than 600km. Too bad our infrastructure does not support fuel cell vehicles, at the moment. Still, one can hope that fuel cell EVs will make their way here.

What may arrive in Malaysia is the Hyundai Kona. It is a compact SUV that neatly slots in below the Tucson in size to compete with the likes of Mazda CX-3, Toyota C-HR and Honda HR-V. There are two versions of the Kona; one electric, one conventional.

The Kona Electric leads the charge with a 201hp and 395Nm of torque from an electric motor that’ll do 482km on a full battery charge. No combustion engine for this SUV, which makes it a pure EV. And that means the chances of the Kona Electric coming here is wire-thin.

The ‘standard’ Kona will have a great chance of arriving in Malaysia than the Kona Electric. A 1.6-litre turbocharged engine capable of producing 175hp and 265Nm, and a seven-speed DCT, gives momentum to this SUV.

The KL International Motor Show 2018 wraps up this weekend, which means you have only days left to touch and feel the Nexo and Kona.
