We’re not quite sure what the design philosophy is in Munich, but bigger grilles seems to be the mandate and the designers haven’t disappointed with the new BMW 7 Series and its X7 sibling. BMW Malaysia launched both today with the limousine being available solely in 740Le xDrive plug-in hybrid with Pure Excellence trim.

It’ll be assembled locally and ditches the previous 2.0-litre turbo four for a new turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six delivering 286hp and 450Nm of torque. A synchronous electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic adds in a further 113hp and 265Nm of torque to bring the combined output to a healthy 394hp and 600Nm of torque. As the name suggests, power goes to all four wheels via the xDrive system. It’’ do the century sprint in a supercar-like 5.3-seconds and keep going to a limited 250kph top speed.

A new 12.kWh high-voltage battery under the rear seat can be charged in four hours and 24 minutes with a 16A/230V outlet. The new battery also increases the range of pure electric mode to 50km over the previous model’s 41km.

The redesign sees many updated exterior cues such as a new front bumper, a higher bonnet line by 50mm, slimmer BMW Laser headlights and the massive grille that is 40 per cent larger. Wheels are 19-inch pieces.

At the derriere, the bumper is tweaked and the taillights are slimmer too with 3D effect lighting though the coolest addition is a light bar running across the taillights above the number plate.

Inside; which is where it matters, the cabin now gets a 12.3-inch Live Cockpit Pro digital instrument panel and a 10.25-inch central display infotainment system that’s touch screen capable.

Helping the driver keep the barge on the straight and narrow is a barrage of BMW Personal CoPilot driver assistance systems comprising a load of cameras and radar-based tech as well as pedestrian warning that is now capable of detecting cyclists.

Further aiding the driver is Evasion Aid. As the name suggests, it amploys steering interventions to aid the driver in sudden evasive maneuvres… such as escaping kidnappers or the taxman. Crossroads Warning with City Brake Activation, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Parking Assistant, Reversing Assistant and the BMW Digital Key for selected Android devices completes the bells and whistles list.

The rest of the interior features lavish materials such as Poplar Grain Grey fine-wood trim, Nappa leather and Alcantara headliner. Even the rear seats are electrically adjustable comfort seats with massage function. A panoramic glass roof with Sky Lounge lights, automatic quad-zone control air-conditioning and roller sunblinds helps the big shots in the rear alienate the peasants from the outside world.

Entertainment is courtesy of a 16-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound System which can be controlled via the updated Gesture Control and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant (like Hi Proton).

You can have your new 7er in four colours; Mineral White, Bernina Grey, Imperial Blue or Black Sapphire. The interior colours are either Black Nappa Leather or Cognac Nappa Leather upholstery.

It’s priced at RM594,800 on the road without insurance and can be had with Balloon Financing Plan from BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia that starts at RM6,788.00.
